Honeymooning?

Caid adjusted so well to her shots and getting her blood sugar checked and had normal numbers...and then slowly her numbers started to drop. They want her blood sugar to be between 100 and 200. She started regularly being below 100 so I stopped giving her the novolog (insulin that she gets at each meal) unless she was high. Then her numbers continued to stay low so the nurse had me cut her lantus (insulin she gets once a day that keeps her stable for 24 hours) dose in half. She was still low. So for the last week or two we have taken her completely off of insulin. And we used to have to check her blood sugar five times a day but they've also had us cut that back to once a day. There is what is called the "Honeymoon period" when someone is diagnosed with diabetes that their pancreas sometimes kicks back in for a while and starts producing insulin again. This could be the case, however, it isn't very often that someone is taken completely off of insulin. They usually still need some shots to keep them stable. We're secretly hoping that maybe it was just an infection that she might have had that was affecting her pancreas and she was misdiagnosed, but we'll continue to watch her numbers and see. But if not, at least we'll know what to watch for and she is one brave little girl so we know she can handle it!

9/30/10 Spoke too soon. Her numbers have gone back up, so they are putting her back on a very small amount of lantus starting tomorrow. We'll get this figured out one of these days. :)
